PROCRASTINATOR (2015) LYRICS

1 Close Your Eyes © 2012 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

The stars are bright outside tonight
The southern sky is full of light
Another busy day is gone
Close your eyes and come on home

Do not let the world intrude
There’s nothing left for you to do
Leave tomorrow ‘til it comes
Close your eyes and come on home.

Sometimes clouds obscure the light
And we’re lost in darkest night
Let this love be like a beacon
Close your eyes and come on home

When the days are long and hard
And the world has worn you down
Sink into these loving arms
Close your eyes and come on home.

The stars are bright outside tonight
The northern sky is full of light
Another busy day is gone
Close your eyes and come on home.
Close your eyes and come on home
Close your eyes and come on home.

2 Old Crow – © 2011 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

Ptarmigan I wanna see your face again, hear your white wings beating over my head
Ptarmigan I wanna see your face again, hear your white wings beating over my head
Porcupine, this heart of mine is just a river winding homeward
Porcupine, this heart of mine is just a river winding homeward
Take me along.

CHORUS
Old Crow open up my soul
Clean bones and a heart that’s willing
Porcupine, ptarmigan, this heart of mine
Take me along.

Caribou I’m waiting for you, to hear the pounding of your hooves - springtime
Caribou I’m waiting for you, to hear the pounding of your hooves – springtime
Like the koho on the line this spirit of mine always tugging homeward
Like the koho on the line this spirit of mine always tugging homeward
Won’t you take me along.

CHORUS
Old Crow open up my soul
Clean bones and a heart that’s willing
Caribou, koho you tug at me
Take me along.

Raven, raven black as coal, in my dreams you’re always flying solo
Raven, raven black as coal, in my dreams you’re always flying solo
Mosquito late last night I heard the jigging by the firelight – jigging
Mosquito late last night I heard the jigging by the firelight – jigging
Won’t you hum one for me.

CHORUS
Old Crow open up my soul
Clean bones and a heart that’s willing
Raven, mosquito, jigging - won’t you hum one for me.
Caribou, koho you tug at me    Take me along
Porcupine, ptarmigan, this heart of mine   Take me along.

Old Crow open up my soul
Clean bones and a heart that’s willing
Old Crow, Old Crow  Wont’ you take me along (x 2)
Old Crow, the spirit tugs, Old Crow, take me along, won’t you take me along.

3 Let My Burden Go © 2011 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

On a dark winged bird, the middle of the night
I flew to the hills of paradise Let my burden go
The wind turned cold the night I came
Cobbled streets soaked with rain, Let my burden go

CHORUS
I am weary, Francesca
Though I have not been awake
Won’t you help me find the grace
to let this burden go.

Down in the hollow by candlelight
Pilgrims come, pay their tithe, Let my burden go
Bells ring through the city streets
[I] kneel in the shade of an olive tree, Let my burden go

CHORUS

BRIDGE
On a sunny, salamander day
High up in the hills where the wild horses graze
On a sea of grass and sky so wide
I felt my flock of sorrows, rise and fly
On a day without words,
Fly, just a little flock of birds
Fly, fly, fly

On a dark winged bird, the middle of the night
I fly to the hills of paradise
Let my burden go, Let my burden go, Let my burden go.

4 Procrastinator © 2013 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

I’m a procrastinator, last minute operator, put things off  ‘til  later, that’s my game
Too much distraction and I’m spinning, no traction; should be taking action for my own sake
Rather than court the muse, sit down and write I choose to ignore all her cues until it’s too late
All my time used up on meaningless mindless stuff of so little value, at the end of the day.

Da'n da da da da da' n da da etc

I’m a procrastinator, last minute operator, put things off  ‘til  later, that’s my game
Too much distraction and I’m spinning, no traction; should be taking action for my own sake

I need a habit, a routine, a practice.
No, not for perfection; just for me.

f I could change but one thing, I’d stop procrastinating; get my rhythm flowing every day
If I could change but one thing, I’d stop procrastinating; get my rhythm flowing every day….
Get my rhythm flowing everyday, Get my rhythm flowing everyday, Get my rhythm flowing everyday

5 SHINY  © 2014 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

Ten miles of gravel, this road that I travel
All those potholes and dust
Make an old body rattle, when you open the throttle
Gears grind, popping the clutch

CHORUS
Pockmarks starting to rust, my shocks are gone
The ride’s getting rough,
I feel you near, every time I veer
Off of the road I know, into the sweet unknown
Beyond these borderlines.

I don’t regret your departure and yet
I’m missing you tonight
Still I’ll hold on to you, in the rear view
Like a beacon, SHINY

CHORUS

Well I’m out here tonight, just my bones and the sky and the stars, SHINY
Got the radio on, the windows rolled down, they’re playing a song about flying
Will you ride next to me until I’m ready? Will you ride next to me? Will you ride next to me until I’m ready to go

Off of the road I know, into the sweet unknown
Beyond these borderlines
Off of the road I know, into the sweet unknown
Beyond these borderlines……
SHINY…. Will you ride next to me until I’m ready?

6 Tender and Tough – © 2010 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

The trouble with lying is you always get caught
The truth shoots up, it won’t be stopped
It’s a flower, pushing through concrete
Tender and tough, just like me.

The  trouble with me is my heart broke bad
Shattered to pieces, I thought I was dead
But I’m still breathing alone in this bed, Alone.

The trouble with alone is it’s a universe
It’s cold and silent….
At first you think you’ll forgive but you never forget, no
It takes so long to be ready for that.

The trouble with waiting is you don’t know what to do
It’s boring, and no one’s listening to you
And you cry, but that ain’t no fun
And your eyes they get all puffy, like you’re staring at the sun.

The trouble with the sun, is it’s a burning star
And the trouble with you, is you don’t know who you are
And the trouble with me, is I love you
I know I shouldn’t, but I still do.

Oh the trouble with holding on to a love you’ve lost
Is it freezes you, like you’ve pressed pause….
you spin your tires, you’re going nowhere fast
Oh you’re stuck on a carousel Twirling through the past.

The trouble with a carousel is it goes round and round
And you get so dizzy, you’re falling down, down
before you know it you’re lying on the ground Lying…

The trouble with lying is you always get caught
The truth shoots up, it won’t be stopped
It’s a flower, pushing through the concrete
Tender and tough,
Just like me.

Tender and tough
Just like me

7 Winter Heart © 2010 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

Morning breaks you broken hearted
Your raven thoughts circle how you parted
A bitter wind blows in and wrecks your sleep
You’re gonna have to learn to be true to yourself, winter heart.

The love you had was a one of a kind,
It was the kind of love you thought you’d never find
why, why?

CHORUS
Winter heart, do not despair
There’s beauty out here, beauty out here
Rosy skies and silver trees
Lavender moraine
Time will ease this pain away
Winter heart,  Winter heart

Ooooh....

Stinging tears, the same old ache when
Everything inside’s either broke or breakin’
You stumble through the drifts, a stormy dream
Awake to the sound of the melting

CHORUS
Winter heart, do not despair
There’s beauty out here, beauty out here
Rosy skies and silver trees
Lavender moraine
Time will ease this pain away, Time will take it all away, Time and a little sunshine

Be true to yourself,
Be true to yourself
Be true to yourself
Be true to yourself

Winter heart , Winter heart

Ooooh...

8 Sweet Release - copyright © Chris MacLean 2012  (SOCAN)

I’m a poor girl, stones in my pockets now and the winter winds are blowing down cold
I’ve got a hunger so deep driving me, a devil’s ransom on my soul
Blow that smoke into my brain, watch me fly away
I’ll do anything mister for that sweet release
You know that that’s the price I pay.

Cocaine took me first when I was 13 on arms open and free
And it lifted me up on a soft summer cloud high above these red dirt streets
I sucked that smoke into my brain, away, away I flew
Now I’ll do anything mister for that same release, anything you ask me to.

The preacher man he says that he can save my soul if I turn towards his Light
And he promises heaven, all the finest rewards, he’ll walk there by my side
He blows those words into my brain, like smoke they drift away
Coz the devil won’t trade my soul for words, a much higher price I’ll pay.

Cold, dark, lonely street; black car in the rain
I know that this is trouble but I cannot help myself, I’m a victim in my own game
Away, away, away we climb, high above the city lights
And even the devil himself well he can’t help me now
I’ll go down without a fight.

I’m a poor girl stones in my pockets
And there’s no hunger driving me, the devil has let me go
He broke my body, stole my breath, Away, away he flew
In the Outeniqua Mountains on a cold, dark night I paid my final dues.

Up in the mountain ridges dark and steep
No one to find her body where she sleeps
Wind will sing her home on a lonesome song
She’ll find her sweet release…..  She’s found her sweet release.

9 On the Rise  © 2014 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

You’ve come so far, you’re nearly through
Give credit now, where credit’s due
You’ve scaled the steep incline
I heard, I heard you crying.

Seeker, seeker, precious pearl
The song is sung across the world
Darkness pierced by Light
I know, I know you’re tryin’

CHORUS
Wind and rain and snow and sleet
Earth, sky and all between
Hearts, hands, marching feet
North South, West, East
I know, I know you’re tryin
I heard, I heard you crying
I know how hard you’re tryin

Weary pilgrim, heavy feet
but in a dream your life is sweet
you dare beyond the lies
I see your sun on the rise.

CHORUS
I know how hard you’re tryin, I see your sun on the rise.

10 You Were Meant to Love –  © 2014 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

Rebel so ragged, rebel so dark
So long running with a war inside your heart
Not the one chosen, neither left behind
Waiting for your turn to shine.

CHORUS
Don’t worry ‘bout it, you were meant to love
Don’t you ever doubt it, you were meant to love
Stars align, fire in your blood
Why you out here boxing, you were meant to love.

Right hand dreamer, left hand scribe
Scribble out beyond the timid heart lines
That’s where you fell, down in the dirt
Time to rise above your hurt.

CHORUS
Don’t worry ‘bout it, it was just the way it was
Don’t you ever doubt it, you were meant to love
Stars align, fire in your blood
Why you out here boxing, you were meant to love.

Repeat Verse 1
Repeat CHORUS 1 (x2)

11 Across the Channel Tonight   © 2014 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

I have a photo of you, 1938,
A storm chasing a wild August day
Waves toss your little canoe
With its patchwork sail, I remember you
Before I was born when your days lingered long
Sweet sounds of summer, the cricket’s song
Echoes of loons and the ravens’ craw
Always the water, always

CHORUS
May these memories kind be the friends you meet
The stones of sorrow, but dust at your feet
And your sails full of Light, As you steer your little vessel
Across the channel tonight.

Your skin warm against sun baked rock
A feather wind, and a pillow of moss
That boy you loved while the bonfires burned, ‘til he went away to war
And he never returned

I remember you making the best of things
A dog at your heel, a garden blooming
Kettles of tea and your ready laugh
We had our differences, yes, but they’re all passed.

CHORUS

Now the shallows of the shoreline have started to freeze
And all that is present so quickly recedes
Still there’s a place where the water never freezes
The sweet sounds of summer rise up from the deep

CHORUS

Repeat Verse I
I remember you, I’ll remember you…
Across the channel tonight.

12 Whiskey Kisses © 2012 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

Got a heart like kite in a hurricane
Don’t try reel it in, you’ll break the string - Na na na na na na
A fist full of wisdom earned down on my knees
Fear in my pocket, the rest on my sleeve - Na na na na na na na na.

CHORUS
Don’t hold me too tight
Give me whiskey kisses tonight.
Don’t hold me too tight
Give me whiskey kisses tonight.

I follow the signs to change my ways
Practice everyday turning the page - Na na na na na na na na.
I’m a slow dancer drawn to the dark
Tunneling through just to mend this heart.

CHORUS

BRIDGE
I cut my losses, ya I let them go, It ain’t so bad flying solo
Here you are warming my skin, Keep it up I might let you in

CHORUS

Slow dancer, drawn to the dark, Tunneling through to mend this heart
Here you are warming my skin, Keep it up I might let you in

CHORUS (x2)

13 Before me Now    © 2012 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

In the aftermath of the crime, blood streaked and torn
Purple skies raining on a cold April morn
But the nails didn’t hold, I crawled down from the cross
Still I wore like a medal all the ribbons of loss
I traded my faith, chose a new theme
Burned down the alter to a broken dream

CHORUS
There you were at my door
Hat in hand, bouquet of promise
What I’ve been asking for
Does it stand before me now, before me now?

There is a crocus lying here in the dark
Just a hard little nut pushing up through the snow and ice in my heart
And it gives me hope To watch the petals unfurl
However slowly and to feel like a girl again, feel like a girl again

CHORUS

Almost ready for spring, come on wake me up singing
And let the water run through me
High above the mirror moon is shining
Pretty soon I’ll be ready, I’ll be ready

CHORUS

Almost ready for spring, come on wake me up singing
And let the water run through me

14   Crooked Lines © 2013 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

A skiff of snow on a rocky ledge, high above my head an eagle soars along the edge
Everyone is searching
Skeleton winter leaf, bleached veins reaching back to the halcyon days of youth and yearning
Everyone is searching.

The marks across on my abdomen once stretched to hold within babies now grown, babes of their own
The weathered imprint of your face, love drawn and then erased, the maps and the footprints traced
Every step, a learning. Everyone is searching.

CHORUS
Like a drunkard I’ve been weaving and staggering off alone
Somehow these crooked lines I have made, they always pointed home.

The constellation of my dreams, the stars and the space between, now shifting
Everything is changing
Cracks in the springtime melt, open to the deeper self
There’s a river under here, a reservoir of knowing
Everything is changing.

CHORUS

The beauty in the open fields left unkempt the chaos yields a canvas, bright, and undulating
Everyday I walk out there, feast my eyes and feel the air on my skin, ALIVE!
Everything connecting, everything connecting.

CHORUS x 2 and OUTRO

15 Salt and Stone (bonus track) © 2013 Chris MacLean (SOCAN)

I’m looking for someone to sing my name
Whose bones fit easy against my frame
All the tender, all brittle will not break but bend a little
Every time he walks towards my flame

I’m looking for someone to catch my fall
At my back so I can stand up tall
Doesn’t have to solve all riddles, just be there to
Lend a little love and comfort every now and then.

CHORUS
Come on, come on, don’t make me wait
The nights are cold , my hour is getting late
Come on, come on, don’t let me down
I’m so tired of carrying this heart around alone.

I’m looking for someone to bust inside
Be the moonlight to my shifting tide
Dance me in the shadow wind, rock me when the waves crash in
Rock me, rock me when the waves crash in

I’m looking for someone who smells like home
Fill my nostrils with your salt and stone
Autumn leaves and summer rain, let me breathe you in again, oh
Let me breathe you in, the scent of home.

CHORUS

I’m looking for someone to sing my name
Catch my fall, and fan my flame
Fill my nostrils with your salt and stone
And turn me inside out and take me home
Take me home, yes

CHORUS
